Two-niners are mountain bikes that are built to use 29” wheels.  Most mountain bicycles use 26″ wheels.  In the early 1980’s, some pioneers such as Gary Fisher helped these bikes grow into popularity.  Early on these bikes were usually only available from small little-known manufactures like Surly Bikes with their Karate Monkey.  Companies that were once dismissive, now have jumped on board.
